February Newsletter 2015

, Welcome to the February, 2015 Newsletter! In this month’s edition we will take you through a Valentine inspired experience, from all over the world. We will also be featuring a romantic dessert for two.

Valentine’s Day Around the World
The month of February is garnished with roses, heart-shaped chocolates, and the desire to get away on a romantic holiday. While the origin of V-Day is unclear, the holiday has spread among a spectrum of cultures in many different manifestations. Below are a series of February destinations where you can experience a different kind of Valentine’s Day.
Helsinki, Finland
For all the uncoupled, Finland’s February holiday is as platonic as they come. The celebration, Ystävänpäivä, or “Friend’s Day,” is about celebrating friendships, not relationships. The Finnish go around spreading love, and chocolates, to all their friends and loved ones. While the holiday is an adopted one, the Finnish variation is still celebrated loudly with festivals and gala carnivals booming all over Helsinki.

Kyoto, Japan
Aside from the romantic beauty of the city, Kyoto is also a fantastic destination for February travelers because of Japan’s interesting take on Valentine’s Day. For a twist on the traditional chocolate swap, Japan’s day of love involves women giving chocolates to men, and not the other way around. Women are able to express their love, and the city is colored with intricate chocolate delicacies. The holiday’s success gave rise to a new holiday, “Reply Day,” on March 14th, whereby men are inclined to reciprocate the chocolates given to them the month before.

Manila, Philippines
Although the Philippines also joined the Valentine’s Day tradition late, its appearance on this list is due to the country’s dedication to honoring the holiday. In 2004, Manila held their first Lovapalooza where thousands of couples gathered at midnight on February 14th to break the Guinness records for most simultaneous kisses. The city has then remained a celebration of love, with parades and festivities all over Manila. It is a great alternative to the standard American Valentine, and one for the record books.
