DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2014

Welcome to the December 2014 Newsletter! In this month’s edition we will be highlighting the best ski and snowboard locations in California.
In This Issue:

Top Ski Resorts in California
There’s something special about California’s diversity. Beach, desert, and snow can be found within hours of each other, something that is, for the rest of the world, a unique rarity. For this month’s newsletter, we’ve decided to feature three, snowy, bear-state locations in close proximity to other terrain. For those of you planning to visit California for only a short time, this is a guide to getting a fair picture of the manifest destiny state.

Mammoth Mountain: Mammoth Lakes, CA
No list of good snow could be complete without Mammoth Mountain. In the purview of the U.S., Mammoth’s snow is some of the best: dry, powdery, forgiving. The same goes for its size: Mammoth has 28 lifts, spanning 3,500 acres. Mammoth has some of the best back-country around—see below for the iconic “Hole in the Wall”—as well as a fantastic snow-play park, equipped with sledding inner-tubes, toboggans, man-made snow mountains, and a snow carousel.

On the East side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Mammoth may seem like a trek to get to, but it’s only four hours away from the state’s capital, and forty miles from Bishop, California: one of the most beautiful hiking and climbing spots in the country.

Lake Tahoe: Lake Tahoe, CA
Tahoe is located on the California-Nevada border, and is known for its sweeping, panoramic views. Aside from the snow sports, you can count on some of the most beautiful, snow-covered landscapes in the country. Tahoe has seven top-class alpine resorts, so anyone interested in variety should find themselves there.

Speaking of variety, Tahoe is located in Stanislaus Forest, the same forest that encompasses Yosemite, so it’s a quick shot away from a camper’s mecca. Also, San Francisco is approximately three hours away. A half-day in the snow could be easily followed by a bowl of beach-side chowder.

Big Bear: Big Bear Lake, CA
Big Bear Mountain wins the ease-of-access category. Some two hours away from both LAX and San Diego Airport, Big Bear is a great place for anyone visiting Southern California for a weekend.

Big Bear proper is a homey mountain town, chock-full of local bars, toboggan parks, and sledding, and, if that’s not enough, there’s always Gaslamp or Hollywood a quick drive from the mountain.

Mt Baldy: San Antonio, CA
Mount San Antonio—colloquially, Mount Baldy—is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, the highest point in Los Angeles County. An extinct volcano, Baldy makes for a great place for snow sports, as well as hiking. The “Ski Hut” trail leads directly to “Baldy’s Bowl,” where tourists can see a massive basin of volcanic lava rock.

Although there are only four main lifts on the mountain, Baldy has maintained its long-standing reputation as the “Crown Jewel” of San Gabriel—as well as most photographed icon in Southern California—because of its accessibility to Los Angeleans. It’s hardly 15 miles from San Ontario. Anyone visiting L.A. who’s short on time should absolutely consider making the short drive up the mountainside.

September Newsletter 2014

Welcome to the September 2014 Newsletter! In this month’s edition we are going to be exploring the quirky, artsy, and very creative city of Asheville, North Carolina.

Asheville North Carolina

September is the start of autumn, so we wanted to feature a destination that embodies the beauty of fall. Located in Western North Carolina, Asheville is made up of beautiful scenery, local organic restaurants, and an eclectic arts scene. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, this city offers one of the country’s longest fall foliage displays, giving its visitors plenty of time to take in the stunning views. Pack your granola and Birkenstocks, and discover the highlights of this charming “Land of the Sky.”

Arts: With a vibrant and every-changing arts community, creative people from all over are drawn to Asheville. The center of all things artistic is in the River Arts District. What used to be abandoned warehouses is now where 150 artists now have working studios in 16 buildings. The studios are open to the public and have created a great hangout spot for locals. Don’t worry, none of these artists are starving… the famous 12 Bones Smokehouse opened in the area and serve baby back ribs to lines of hungry customers.

Outdoors:There are many openings to parts of the Appalachian Trail throughout Asheville. If you don’t have time to hike the entire 2,180 miles, you can still experience the trail in small doses. For a high altitude hike, walk from Newfound Gap to the mountain peak strangely named Charlie’s Bunion. The moderate 4-mile hike takes you up to 6,222 feet, where you'll be greeted with 360-degree views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Another great outdoor attraction is Chimney Rock State Park. Here you’ll climb many stairs to reach a jaw-dropping view from atop the 315-foot-high granite monolith.

Attractions:The Biltmore Estate is the Versailles of America. Built by George Vanderbilt in 1895, the estate has 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, 43 bathrooms, and sits on 8,000 acres of land! Talk about lavish! Admission also includes access to Antler Hill Village, where you can do a wine tasting at the Biltmore Winery. Other attractions to visit while in Asheville are the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site, the Basilica of St. Lawrence, and Park Place Education, Arts & Science Center.

Eats: Asheville has put itself on the culinary map with its unique flavors and love of organic ingredients. Embracing the farm-to-table moto, the city has some of the freshest foods going into all of their meals. With 17 local farmers-markets, you don’t have to eat out to get a fresh meal. Artists, bakers, cheese makers, and farmers provide locally made and grown products weekly. Early Girl Eatery is a hip, locally sourced eatery that gets most of their ingredients from farmers in region. The menu changes with the seasons, and includes southern favorites like shrimp and grits, pan-friend catfish, and many vegetarian options.

Copenhagen: A Land of Art and Fairytales

Welcome to the August 2014 Newsletter! In this month’s edition we are going to be exploring the Fairytale city of Copenhagen.

From Viking ships to ancient castles and palaces inhabited by modern day princes and princesses, cobblestone narrow streets, and a certain sculpture of a little mermaid, Copenhagen is a modern day fairytale with a happy ending.

Royal Copenhagen: Amalienborg Palace is the winter home of the Danish Royal Family. You can sometimes see princes and princesses going in and out of the castle gates, and maybe even the Queen herself. Take your picture with a Royal Guard, but don’t expect him to smile or say “cheese”. Visit Rosenborg Castle, once home to the royal family until 1720 when it was renovated to be a historical museum. The museum houses the Rosenborg tapestries, the coronation throne, and a basement full of crowns and crown jewels. Next, head over to Kronborg Castle which is known worldwide as the “home” of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. As the setting for one of the most well-known tragedies, Kronborg continues to attract literary tourists from all over.

Fairytale Copenhagen: The city was once the home of famous writer, Hans Christian Anderson. Best known for his fairytales like “The Little Mermaid”, “The Princess and the Pea”, and “Thumbelina”, you can take a tour his home at Nyhavn (house No. 9). The Little Mermaid statue at Langelinje Pier is a famous tourist attraction, constructed in 1913 and based off the fairytale written by Anderson. The statue was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen, owner of Carlsberg Breweries, and given as a gift to the city. He was inspired by Hans Beck’s ballet based on the fairytale in 1909.

Arts of Copenhagen: Carl Jacobsen’s love of the arts extended beyond the Little Mermaid. He used money from beer sales to buy and donate Scandinavia’s largest private art collection to the Danish nation. These pieces now live in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Today, the Glyptotek showcases more than 10,000 ancient and modern works in four buildings. The Viking Museum offers an insight to life at sea 1000 years ago. There are 5 original Viking ships, and a chance to sail like a Viking on the Roskilde Fjord. Take a tour of Denmark's National Museum to view exhibitions from the Stone Age, the Viking Age, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and Modern Danish History.

Treats of Copenhagen: The stars have aligned in this city to give you amazing food… Michelin-stars that is. With 17 Michelin stars in 15 restaurants, Denmark is known to be Scandinavia’s gourmet food capital. Noma has been ranked the Best Restaurant in the World in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014 by British Restaurant Magazine. With 2 stars in the Michelin Guide, this is a must-eat hot spot. Nyhavn was once an old commercial port, but today the beautiful old houses have been renovated into modern classy restaurants. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, jazz music and great food by the canal.

JULY 2014 NEWSLETTER

Summer in San Francisco
July is a perfect time to visit San Francisco! The city offers artsy neighborhoods, breath taking views, and imaginative cuisine. There is no shortage of ways to stay busy in this bustling city. Spend your mornings in one of the many cozy cafes, sun bath on the beaches, enjoy a ride on a cable car, and later, enter the city’s busy nightlife. We have broken down some of our favorite things to do in this beautiful Northern California metropolis.

Attractions: The attractions in San Francisco are endless, so put on your walking shoes and hop on the nearest cable-car because you have a lot to see! Its bright red, very long, and hard to miss…yes it’s the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the most photographed things on Earth, this 1.7 mile bridge can be viewed by foot or bike on the walkway. Next, take a boat across the water to Alcatraz, the legendary former prison of the region. Visit the sea lions and marketplace of Fisherman’s Wharf, do some shopping in Union Square, and stroll around the many culturally diverse museums of the city.

Outdoors: Get outside and experience the beauty of the Northern California outdoors. The Presidio encompasses 11 miles of hiking trails in, around, and throughout San Francisco. The Golden Gate Park is the largest park in the city, where you can walk to gardens, lakes, and museums. If you want to get in some beach time, visit Ocean Beach where you can watch the surfers, play volleyball, have a bonfire, or just relax. Only 12 miles outside of the city, Muir Woods is home of towering California Redwoods which can reach heights of 258 feet and date back 1,200 years.
Food: San Francisco’s dining is diverse and imaginative. World-renowned chefs like Michael Mina and Tyler Florence have opened restaurants in the city, offering organic ingredients and top of the line dishes. Some restaurants have gotten so much hype that they require reservations months in advance, so if you have your eye on a certain dining experience, be sure to reserve it now! Some regional specialties include Dungeness crab, local sourdough bread, It’s-It ice cream treat, and of course, Rice-A-Roni.

Nightlife: With over 1,000 watering holes in San Francisco, you should have no problem finding the city’s nightlife. With most of the historic bars around North Beach and Chinatown, this is a great place to start. The Saloon dates back to 1886, and the Tosca Café was once a popular hangout for celebrities and intellectuals. For a great happy-hour on the water, try Americano Restaurant and Bar on the Embarcadero at Market St. and then stop by The Redwood Room of the Clift Hotel for an stylish scene with an occasional movie star spotting. If you want to dance the night away at a popular club, visit the South of Market Avenue (SoMa) neighborhorhood.

MAY NEWSLETTER

Summer in Charleston, South Carolina!

May marks the beginning of summer with Memorial Day. Want to celebrate at the beach in warm sun, and your toes in the sand? Or, do you want to kick off summer with the busy vibe of the city, and long list of popular restaurants? Charleston South Carolina encompasses both! A charming city with ocean views, top notch restaurants, historical attractions, and Southern hospitality.

Memorial Day kicks off Charleston’s world-renowned Spoleto Festival, which brings 17 days and nights of theater, dance, opera, symphonic and jazz music, and more to Charleston’s historic venues. The Spoleto Opening Night Fête, located at the college of Charleston’s President’s house,  kicks off the festivities with a cocktail supper, live music, full bar, and exciting guest list.

With its horse-drawn carriages, colorful gardens and cool ocean breezes, Charleston exudes old-world romance. Isle of Palms, only 24 minutes from downtown Charleston, is a great place for a quick walk on the beach or a dip in the ocean. Then get back to the city in time for dinner. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens are the oldest gardens in the US (1680), and they’re open 365 days a year. With year round blooms, and a beautiful 17th century estate, it’s an amazing combination of history and beauty.

Each home, church, and storefront in Charleston seems to have some history behind it. Some amazing places to visit while you’re in the city: Fort Sumter National Monument, the location of the official start to the Civil War. “Rainbow Row”, established in the 1700s, was the center of Charleston’s commerce district, with storefronts on the first floor and shop owners’ homes on the second. Today, it’s all residential, but a great photo op, and picturesque site. The Old Exchange Building & Provost Dungeon was a prison during the American Revolution; a place where President George Washington greeted locals; and where the Declaration of Independence was publicly read.

The city is home to many amazing restaurants and bars. It can get pretty hot in the summer, so a nice retreat to a rooftop bar makes for a cool breeze and nice view. Some iconic rooftops include Market Pavilion, Vendue Inn, Henry’s House, and Star’s Rooftop Bar.

Some famous South Carolina dishes to try on your trip include She-crab soup, Low country Boil, and Shrimp and Grits. To wash it all down, don’t forget to order a large glass of sweet tea.

Low country Boil Recipe
A simple dish to make for a large group or party, the Low country Boil is a staple of South Carolina, and man is it good!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon seafood seasoning (such as Old Bay®), or to taste
  • 5 pounds red potatoes
  • 3 (16 ounce) packages cooked kielbasa sausage, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 6 ears fresh corn, husks and silks removed
  • 6 (4-inch) smoked sausage link sausage
  • 4 pounds fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined

DIRECTIONS

Fill a large pot with enough water to cover all of the ingredients. Add the seafood seasoning and bring to a boil. Adjust the seafood seasoning to suit your taste.

When the water boils, add the potatoes and sausage. Cook on medium heat for 20 minutes.

Add corn and cook for an additional 10 minutes.

Add shrimp and cook for no more than 3 minutes.

Drain and serve with warm bread and a cold beverage.

April in New Orleans!

A jam-packed calendar and ideal weather make April a fantastic time to visit
New Orleans. The city stays hopping all month long thanks to a quartet of
popular events: the French Quarter Festival (April 11-14, 2013), Pirate Week
(April 18-22), New Orleans Jazz Festival (April 26-May 5), and the family-focused New Orleans Giant Puppet Festival (April 25-28).
 French Quarter Festival:

Over 30 years ago this festival started as a small
neighborhood celebration and has grown to be “The World’s Largest Block Party.”
Celebrating the best of Louisiana’s music, food, and culture, you would never
believe this festival is FREE! Some events include 21 stages set up throughout
the French Quarter with live music, and the “World’s Largest Brunch” in
Jackson Square put on by local restaurants. French Quarter Festival embodies
what the city’s French founders called "Le joie de vivre" – "The joy of life."

NOLA Pyrate Week:

Pyrate week was created to promote awareness the city after
Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The week now serves two main functions:
1. To give back to New Orleans and Louisiana through volunteering time and
energy to rebuild, restore, and preserve the communities and culture.
2. To gather all who believe in the Dirty Coast
mantra “Be a New Orleanian Wherever You Are”. People enjoy 10 days of the true nature of New Orleans
while enjoying food, drinks, and entertainment.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival :

This huge music festival celebrates the culture and music of New Orleans and
Louisiana.  Not only is there live music going day and night, but a large
variety of vendors selling local foods and crafts are also strewn throughout
the city. Proceeds from the festival go to year-round community development
programs in the areas of education, economic development, and culture.

The New Orleans Giant Puppet Festival:

The puppet festival was such a large success last year, the Marigny Opera
House and the Mudlark Public Theatre have decided to present this year’s
festival over two weekends this spring. Headliners include a 15-foot-tall
monkey king and a dragon as long as an automobile. The festival's early evening
shows are intended for all ages. They retell folktales, creation myths, a
Chinese epic and more. Late night brings a separate program devoted to adults-
only puppet

                                                                  New Orleans Beignets

What started as a French pastry has become a popular New Orleans Creole cuisine served as a dessert.

INGREDIENTS
1 (1/4-oz.) envelope active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water (105° to 115°), divided
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup evaporated milk
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
6 1/2 to 7 cups bread flour
Vegetable oil
Sifted powdered sugar

DIRECTIONS

1. Make the yeast mixture: Combine yeast, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1 tsp. granulated sugar in bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer; let stand 5 minutes. Add milk, eggs, salt, and remaining granulated sugar.

2. Form a dough: Microwave remaining 1 cup water until hot (about 115°); stir in shortening until melted. Add to yeast mixture. Beat at low speed, gradually adding 4 cups flour, until smooth. Gradually add remaining 2 1/2 to 3 cups flour, beating until a sticky dough forms. Transfer to a lightly greased bowl; turn to grease top. Cover and chill 4 to 24 hours.

3. Roll and cut: Turn dough out onto a floured surface; roll to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 2 1/2-inch squares.

4. Fry until golden: Pour oil to depth of 2 to 3 inches into a Dutch oven; heat to 360°. Fry dough, in batches, 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on a wire rack. Dust immediately with powdered sugar.
                                                              ENJOY!
