September Newsletter 2014

Welcome to the September 2014 Newsletter! In this month’s edition we are going to be exploring the quirky, artsy, and very creative city of Asheville, North Carolina.

Asheville North Carolina

September is the start of autumn, so we wanted to feature a destination that embodies the beauty of fall. Located in Western North Carolina, Asheville is made up of beautiful scenery, local organic restaurants, and an eclectic arts scene. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, this city offers one of the country’s longest fall foliage displays, giving its visitors plenty of time to take in the stunning views. Pack your granola and Birkenstocks, and discover the highlights of this charming “Land of the Sky.”

Arts: With a vibrant and every-changing arts community, creative people from all over are drawn to Asheville. The center of all things artistic is in the River Arts District. What used to be abandoned warehouses is now where 150 artists now have working studios in 16 buildings. The studios are open to the public and have created a great hangout spot for locals. Don’t worry, none of these artists are starving… the famous 12 Bones Smokehouse opened in the area and serve baby back ribs to lines of hungry customers.

Outdoors:There are many openings to parts of the Appalachian Trail throughout Asheville. If you don’t have time to hike the entire 2,180 miles, you can still experience the trail in small doses. For a high altitude hike, walk from Newfound Gap to the mountain peak strangely named Charlie’s Bunion. The moderate 4-mile hike takes you up to 6,222 feet, where you'll be greeted with 360-degree views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Another great outdoor attraction is Chimney Rock State Park. Here you’ll climb many stairs to reach a jaw-dropping view from atop the 315-foot-high granite monolith.

Attractions:The Biltmore Estate is the Versailles of America. Built by George Vanderbilt in 1895, the estate has 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, 43 bathrooms, and sits on 8,000 acres of land! Talk about lavish! Admission also includes access to Antler Hill Village, where you can do a wine tasting at the Biltmore Winery. Other attractions to visit while in Asheville are the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site, the Basilica of St. Lawrence, and Park Place Education, Arts & Science Center.

Eats: Asheville has put itself on the culinary map with its unique flavors and love of organic ingredients. Embracing the farm-to-table moto, the city has some of the freshest foods going into all of their meals. With 17 local farmers-markets, you don’t have to eat out to get a fresh meal. Artists, bakers, cheese makers, and farmers provide locally made and grown products weekly. Early Girl Eatery is a hip, locally sourced eatery that gets most of their ingredients from farmers in region. The menu changes with the seasons, and includes southern favorites like shrimp and grits, pan-friend catfish, and many vegetarian options.
