Summer in Charleston, South Carolina!

May marks the beginning of summer with Memorial Day. Want to celebrate at the beach in warm sun, and your toes in the sand? Or, do you want to kick off summer with the busy vibe of the city, and long list of popular restaurants? Charleston South Carolina encompasses both! A charming city with ocean views, top notch restaurants, historical attractions, and Southern hospitality.

Memorial Day kicks off Charleston’s world-renowned Spoleto Festival, which brings 17 days and nights of theater, dance, opera, symphonic and jazz music, and more to Charleston’s historic venues. The Spoleto Opening Night FĂȘte, located at the college of Charleston’s President’s house,  kicks off the festivities with a cocktail supper, live music, full bar, and exciting guest list.

With its horse-drawn carriages, colorful gardens and cool ocean breezes, Charleston exudes old-world romance. Isle of Palms, only 24 minutes from downtown Charleston, is a great place for a quick walk on the beach or a dip in the ocean. Then get back to the city in time for dinner. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens are the oldest gardens in the US (1680), and they’re open 365 days a year. With year round blooms, and a beautiful 17th century estate, it’s an amazing combination of history and beauty.

Each home, church, and storefront in Charleston seems to have some history behind it. Some amazing places to visit while you’re in the city: Fort Sumter National Monument, the location of the official start to the Civil War. “Rainbow Row”, established in the 1700s, was the center of Charleston’s commerce district, with storefronts on the first floor and shop owners’ homes on the second. Today, it’s all residential, but a great photo op, and picturesque site. The Old Exchange Building & Provost Dungeon was a prison during the American Revolution; a place where President George Washington greeted locals; and where the Declaration of Independence was publicly read.

The city is home to many amazing restaurants and bars. It can get pretty hot in the summer, so a nice retreat to a rooftop bar makes for a cool breeze and nice view. Some iconic rooftops include Market Pavilion, Vendue Inn, Henry’s House, and Star’s Rooftop Bar.

Some famous South Carolina dishes to try on your trip include She-crab soup, Low country Boil, and Shrimp and Grits. To wash it all down, don’t forget to order a large glass of sweet tea.
